The legendary Mexican version of Leontine Sagan’s Weimar cinema classic Mädchen in Uniform (1931) and the only one that ends in the same way as the Christa Winsloe play they are all based on. The individual lesbian dimension of the story doesn’t come to the fore here – for Bolongaro-Crevenna, the problem of patriarchal structures and how these lead women to feel alienated from themselves was more important. The production design is kept in the style of expressionism, which only underlines the film’s penchant for abstraction. The fierceness with which the Catholic church is condemned at the end arrives in somewhat unexpected fashion, however, above all in the context of the 50s Mexico… (om)
